Suriname participates for the first time in International Museum Day
Whether for a day, a weekend or an entire week, IMD (International Museum Day) 2013 will be celebrated worldwide around 18 May, and for the first time ever, Suriname will take part in the festivities!
Created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, IMD was introduced as a means for the general public to discover museums and culture in general, and for museum professionals to raise awareness about the challenges faced by their institutions.
This year, the theme is Museums (memory + creativity) = social change and on this occasion, Suriname will disseminate 1,000 IMD posters for schools in order to encourage the creation and development of museums all around the country, and in particular to support the nation in creating its own National Museum. Tours will also be organised for children in specific museums.
Shirley Sitaldin, Minister of Education and Culture in Suriname is actively involved in the event, and hopes to mobilise the population and the authorities by making a small change to the official theme in order to illustrate Suriname’s attachment to museums: Museums (Memory + Culture Consciousness) = Museumlove.
