Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, Nicosia
On the occasion of the International Museum Day on 18 May 2013, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation presents two different exhibitions at the two museums it curates.
Memory and creativity is the axis around which, for years now, evolve the educational programmes of the two museums curated by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, the Museum of the George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection and the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage. Children’s contributions, produced during their participation in the educational programmes, have informed the rationale for these two museum presentations:
1. “The dancing statue at the Archaeological Museum of the George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection. An imaginary children’s museum within the museum”.
The educational programme The dancing statue runs for the 3rd year in the Archaeological Museum of the George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection. This programme aims at acquainting the children with specimens of ancient Cypriot art, by enabling them to recognize figures, drawings and forms with which they can identify, in a way that helps them grasp the common thread that runs through the history of our land.
Artist Maria Loizidou prepared the program, which includes three different sub-programs:
“The pattern”, “The form”, The Vessel, My Own Story”.
2. “A Cypriot coin. Drawing propositions at the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage”.
The Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage hosts a periodical exhibition, entitled “The collectors coins of the Central Bank of Cyprus”.
This exhibition provides a source of inspiration to the children participating in the educational programmes of the museum, for the creation of drawings/propositions for a collective Cypriot coin/memento. A selection of these drawings will be presented in the museum in thematical art portfolios.

Work, love and live in Germany : TECHNOSEUM on labor migration
The first guest workers came to Germany 60 years ago. The federal government received at the time thousands of people from Italy, Turkey, Spain and Yugoslavia who signed on as guest workers, because of the exodus of German workers. Meanwhile, many families live in the third generation in Germany.
This theme inscribes itself in IMD’s 2013 slogan Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change, and is further investigated in the special exhibition “Through darkness to light- Labour History 1863-2013”.
On May 12, the theme Labor migration will be placed at the foreground of Technoseum, in cooperation with cultural associations. From 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, activities include films, a discussion panel and a theatrical play that offers a glimpse into the cultural life of migrant workers.
Admission to all events is free for all visitors on this day.

Kunstpalais Erlangen, Erlangen, Bavaria
Exhibition: Freiheit!
12 international artists: Alexander Apóstol (Venezuela), Johanna Billing (Schweden), CAMP (Indien), Haejun Jo (Südkorea), Bouchra Khalili (Marokko), Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen (Dänemark), Klara Lidén (Schweden), Lars Ø Ramberg (Norwegen), Nedko Solakov (Bulgarien), Ai Weiwei (China), Artur Zmijewski (Polen)
The Kunstpalais dedicates a group exhibition to the topic ‘freedom’ due to the 200th anniversary of the decisive battle of the nations of the wars of liberation in 1813. Recent revolutions in the Arab world are regarded as a starting point for the exhibition and some of the artworks are dealing with this subject. The concept of the show seeks to investigate the topic of political liberty, the fight for democracy and human rights, the desire for departure and the struggle for self-determination.
What does freedom mean today? Ilija Trojanow, Juli Zeh and Mathias Döpfner have already warned to give up freedom in order to apparently achieve more security. In his book ‘Die Freiheitsfalle’ (‘The Trap of Freedom’) Döpfner writes that for Europeans liberty is solely an emotional, subjective experience whereas for other peoples freedom often means an existential struggle for basic rights: ‘Europeans marvel and comment on how Americans, Chinese, Indians, Brazilians and Arabs change the world. The defence of freedom as a universal value has hardly a powerful voice in Europe any more. The old world has become old.’ Is that true?
Twelve internationally renowned artists examine the highly explosive topic from various points of view. Numerous new artworks have been created for the show.

Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
Objects and places, like people, have their own life cycle. Both “objects” and “places” as part of our memory enclose different values and meanings, feelings and experiences, and they narrate stories for each of us. So if the objects enclose memories Museums protect and interprets this memory. The AMTh, on the occasion of the lunch of the International Museum Day 2013 decided to share, using facebook, its own memories of everyday life and history: connect with us on facebook and discover less known stories about the Museum and share with us the challenge of setting up an exhibition, learn about the famous visitors of the Museum, the background of the theft of a statue in the Second World War, the maintenance of a find, the adventure of a gold crown from the hands of looters to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and many more … . Share with us your memories and codify your own experience through objects or places that are part of your precious memories (photos, stories, testimonies, poems, videos, etc.). All these memory will be the core of an online virtual exhibition. An exhibition made by the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and its friends!

Music concert performed by Noches de Tango at 9 PM: Marcelo Mercadante is one of the best Argentine “bandeonistas” of Europe. Due to his great versatility, he is currently one of the most prestigious composers of “tango”. He plays along with Gustavo Battaglia, an Argentine guitar player of “tango”, and Mayte Caparrós, one of the great voices of the Argentine “tango”. Her singing deeply recalls the urban life, the sadness produced by the change, the passing of time… Silvia Lezcano and Omar Quiroga dance defining their “tango” by the expression, the strength and the elegance of the interpretation.

On May 18, the National Museum of Anthropology will be celebrating International Museum Day (IMD) following this year’s theme Museums (memory + creativity = social progress). The MNA will be asking its visitors the following question: “How can we transform the National Anthropology Museum into a more modern and creative institution?” To answer the question, museum visitors can pick up colored sheets at the box office, in which they can write and/or draw what they believe would represent a modernization of the Museum, while retaining its function of preserving and showing its collections. All sheets will be placed in the lobby of the museum where they can be seen until May 31.

Museo Artium, Vitoria, Basque Country
With International Museum Day 2013 and its theme Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change as a starting point, our proposal is to create a large database that gathers together “the first museum experience” that each of us can remember.
A creative and participatory exercise that calls for the memories of visitors and that will help us to analyse how museums have evolved, how they have been reinvented to achieve their goal of being instruments of social progress.
Do you remember your First Museum Experience?
A creative and participatory exercise, that asks for the memory of our visitors and that will allow us to analyze the Museums evolution, how have they been redefined in order to achieve its goal of being instruments of social change.
PUBLICS
Everyone who sometime visited a Museum, whatever the discipline and contents of the Museum and regardless of age, gender, socio-economic status or nationality of the visitor.
Moreover, it would be very interesting to get the experiences of users in different museums, with different ages, men and women, living in different countries, … .in such a way that will allow an analysis from the single case to the more global approach; a micro and macro analysis of “the first experience in a museum”.
Your First Museum Experience
What does each visitor remember about his/her first visit to a Museum?
A universal element for all the museums (all the visitors had a first experience), that might be used to activate the complicity with the visitor, to involve her/him in the project. A proposal that, while it has been developed, will transmit how the museum model has been modified, converting the visitor into an active part of the visit.
Testimonies, experiences … can be collected via the enabled social networks or email addresses, and may also be collected in each Museum.
Experiences might be collected via one text, a video, a drawing,… even a representation of how it was that first experience.
“Your First Museum Experience” Database
A real Working Platform
This initiative will collect valuable information, in order to analyze the way the museums experiences have changed and also how the Museum Model has therefore been redefined.
. Each Museum might extract the indicators that it needs and/or are interested in.
In order to enable a quantitative analysis, all the inputs will get automatically tabulated, so that you can extract information and indicators.
To achieve this, it will be designed a short, friendly and online (Google docs) questionnaire that will be sent to all participants. The answers will be automatically worked by the program and the results and graphs will be accessible at the time.
Accessible to all the museums
The philosophy that underlies this project is that this Database will have to be shared, as a tool for developing cohesion and global teamwork among museums around the world.

Museu de Prehistória de Valéncia
During the week of the 18th of May, and to celebrate the International Museum Day, we have organised an special event in relation to our temporary exhibition Prehistory and Cinema. The event will be a Film Festival and the title is A Prehistory in the Movies.
Just like in every Film Festival, the visitors will watch different films and vote for them. The visitors will be both audience and jury, and they will play an active role in relation to the films they will be watching.
The purpose of our proposal lies in the fact that visitors get to think about some aspects of the perception and presentation of the Prehistory in the fiction by comparing fragments of movies to scientific knowledge from the collections on display in the galleries of the Museum.
This activity is intended for schoolchildren during the week, but it will be open to every visitor on Saturday the 18th of May.

Museums Day and Night
18 May 2013
On 18 May the Museum will once again be celebrating International Museums Day with free entry to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections and a series of activities organised by the Education Department based on the ICOM’s slogan for this year’s event: Museums (memory and creativity) = social progress. Between 12 noon and 2pm a group of young and older people will give short explanatory talks on the works that make up the “Urban Views in the Collection” tour. Between 4pm and 6pm participants in the Museum’s educational programmes will introduce the public to details to be seen in a series of “Selected Works”. In addition, visitors can take part in the installation “Written for memory” by contributing their particular experiences of the Museum. For all those unable to visit in person, there will be the option to take part through the social networks, sending images via Facebook, Twitter and e-mail that will be used to create a photographic record of the Museum and its surroundings over time.
This year, International Museums Day coincides with Museums Night. The Museum will therefore be offering free entry to the Collections from 10am to 1am.

Cayman Islands National Museum
Every year, the Cayman Islands National Museum celebrates International Museums Day, a worldwide awareness day that draws attention to the importance of Museums in both preservation and social development.
This year, we celebrate International Museums Day on Saturday, May 18th with the opening of two new exhibitions in our Changing and Children’s Galleries.
Passing Through: Migratory Birds of the Cayman Islands and Birdie serve the dual purpose of also celebrating International Migratory Bird Day, whose theme this year is Life Cycles of Migratory Birds. In our courtyard and on Goring Avenue, we welcome a combination of traditional and contemporary vendors to take part in a special Children’s Looky Ya festival in honour of Child Month – after all, who better to bring about social change than our youth? Needless to say, we have a vibrant day ahead of us – celebrating Museums, Migratory Birds and Children all in one fun filled and educational event from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
Passing Through: Migratory Birds of the Cayman Islands; Changing Gallery (May – November 2013)
The Cayman Islands celebrates International Migratory Bird Day – Life Cycles of Migratory Birds. Making up over 75% of Cayman’s recorded bird species, migratory birds are an integral part of the Cayman Islands’ natural life. With 3D models, visual route maps, informational panels and a slideshow amongst other features, Passing Through displays the rich bird life traveling through the Cayman Islands year round.
The National Museum extends special thanks to The National Trust for the Cayman Islands, Mrs. Christine Rose-Smyth of the Cayman Islands Bird Club, and Environment for the Americas for their generous assistance with exhibit research, design and educational materials.
Birdie; Children’s Gallery (May – November 2013)
In Birdie, Children can find out what it’s like to be a baby bird! With a floor to ceiling mother bird overhead, kids can dress up in feathery costumes and nestle into our life sized nest for play time and photo opportunities. This exhibit is sure to provide great educational value, all with a big dose of fun!
Children’s Looky Ya; Museum Courtyard and Goring Avenue
On May 18th we dedicate Looky Ya, The National Museum’s traditional arts festival, to Children. Lining our courtyard and the adjoining Goring Avenue with both traditional and contemporary activities tailored to families, the Museum joins forces with the Department of Children and Family Services to provide a fun filled and educational event for all ages to enjoy.
